JR East Pass Nagano Niigata Area Pass

5 DAYS CONSECUTIVE

The JR East Pass (Nagano Niigata Area) is 5 days of unlimited travel on trains and Shinkansen in the area covered. It’s a 5 day consecutive pass only available to non-Japanese passport holders.   

The pass can be used to travel from Sakata to as far as Shimoda. It can be used on JR EAST Lines, Tokyo Monorail, Izu Kyuko Line, Hokuetsu Express, Chiho TOKImeko Railway (between Naoetsu and Arai) and more – please see full details below.

EXCHANGE COUPON DELIVERY OPTION

  • Passes are issued within 5 days of receiving your order and an e-ticket exchange coupon will be emailed to you the following business day.

RAIL PASS ELIGIBILITY

  • Only available to non-Japanese passport holders

EXCHANGE IN JAPAN

  • You require an exchange coupon in final documentation before departing Australia, as you will need to exchange this for your actual Rail Pass in Japan. Your exchange coupon must be exchanged within 3 months from when the exchange coupon is issued. 
  • After arrival in Japan, present your voucher (e-ticket) issued by JTB along with your passport and a pickup location. An eligibility check will be conducted, after which you will receive your JR EAST Pass. You must bring your passport (not copy of) when you collect your pass. 
  • JR Exchange Offices (Offices and service hours are subject to change or discontinuation without notice).

RAIL PASS VALIDITY

  • Valid for 5 consecutive days. You can use your pass for 5 consecutive days starting on the date you indicate when exchanging for your actual pass in Japan. 
  • Unlimited access to JR East lines, you can purchase the pass and it’s valid for five consecutive days. 
  • The lines include in the pass:
    • JR EAST Lines
    • Tokyo Monorail
    • Izu Kyuko Line
    • Hoketsu Express
    • Echigo TOKImeki Railway: Arai-Naoetsu.
    • Reserved seats in ordinary cars of the following express trains with through operations between JR East and Tobu Railway lines: Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa trains. 
    • You can also use ordinary trains (including rapid trains) on the Tobu Railway lines between Shimo-imaichi and Tobu-nikko / Kinugawa-onsen. Between Kurihashi and Shimo-imaichi, you can only use express trains that have through operation with Tobu Railway. 
    • JR buses in the area (excluding highway and some regular bus routes) 
  • Notes:
    • You cannot use express trains that both depart from and terminate at stations on Tobu Railway lines. You can only use the JR East Pass (Nagano Niigata Area) on Tobu Railway lines if the train either departs from or terminates at a JR station. 
    • You cannot use the JR East Pass (Nagano Niigata Area) to travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen. (This is because it’s operated by a different company).
    • The section between Minami-Otari and Itoigawa on the Oito Line and between Itoigawa and Joetsumyoko on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is not included in the pass. If you wish to use the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Itoigawa, please purchase a standard fare ticket and a super (limited) express train ticket from Itoigawa to Joetsumyoko. 
    • Gala Yuzawa Station only operates during the winter and spring. 

SEAT RESERVATIONS

  • Shinkansen and limited express train seats can be reserved using reserved seat ticket vending machines at major JR East stations. 
  • JR East Pass holders can reserve seats on Shinkansen services, express trains, Joyful Trains, and other trains. Seats are limited, so please make your reservation as early as possible.
  • You can reserve seats on trains up to 1 month prior to the date of your journey.
  • When you purchase a JR East Pass from JTB, you can make a seat reservation on the JR East website.

    You will have to register as a member yourselves with credit card details and make the reservation in person (select “Seat reservation” button on the right, then exchange your pass at the “Travel Concierge” at the station). https://www.eki-net.com/en/jreast-train-reservation/Top/Index

    You must also present the credit card which your used to reserve the seat, and tell the ticket office that you have already purchased a pass, JR East company staff will then issue you with a reserved seat.

EXCHANGE COUPON CANCELLATION

  • An exchange coupon can be refunded within 1 year of purchase. A 20% cancellation fee will be charged. 10% of the booking will be charged as a cancelation fee, 10% will be held in credit for future travel of up to 12 months. Any delivery fee or credit card surcharge is non refundable. Please note that if you have exchanged the Pass in Japan, the ticket is non-changeable and non-refundable.
  • You will need to send the original exchange coupon back to the office of purchase for a refund. 
  • Any changes made to date, type or length of a pass will be treated as a cancellation and cancellation fees will apply.
  • If you forget to take your Exchange Coupon to Japan, JTB is unable to send it to Japan nor send by email, as it’s a physical coupon. Japan Railway Companies will not accept any scanned copies or email confirmations of the Exchange Coupons.
  • Also, if you lose or stolen your Exchange Coupon before you activate it, you may be able to get a refund. Cancellation fees will apply for a refund.
  • If JTB finds the Exchange Coupon to be used you will be re-charged for the full amount of the passes on the credit card used to purchase the original Exchange Coupon. Alternatively, should the original coupons be found, they must be returned JTB Australia immediately.
  • If your Exchange Coupons have already been activated, you won’t be able to get a refund.
  • Lost / Stolen: 

    Before departing Australia:

    Purchase a new pass from JTB again. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, JTB will refund the full amount of the lost original pass OR fill out a consent form (contact us for more information).

    After departing Australia – before rail pass exchange:

    Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website. After 3 months if the lost pass has not been exchange/activated, you may be able to get a refund. Above standard cancellation fees apply for a refund.

    After departing Australia – after rail pass exchange:

    Strictly non-refundable. Purchase a new pass on the JR Pass official website.

EXCHANGE COUPON RE ISSUE

  • After purchase and voucher issuance, a re-issue fee of $60 per change will apply for any name correction (This applies to corrections only. Completely different names will be treated as a cancellation). You must send the original exchange coupon back to the office of purchase.
  • Exchange coupons are valid for use within 3 months from the date of issuance and this validity period cannot be altered or extended. Any passes that are issued and go unused within the validity period may be re-issued within 12 months for $60, plus any applicable delivery and credit card surcharges.
  • Neither an exchange coupon nor a Japan Rail Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen.

The JR East Pass (Tohoku Area) is 5 days of unlimited travel on trains and Shinkansen in the area covered. It’s a 5 day consecutive pass only available to non-Japanese passport holders.   

The pass can be used on the Shinkansen to Tohoku and around Sendai. Want to go further and explore multiple different areas such as Yamagata Zao, Akita Shirakami and Aomori Oirase? Want to enjoy travelling to places in and around Tokyo such as Shinjuku, Akihabara and Kamakura? Then this is the pass. Please see full details below.

    • You can also use ordinary trains (including rapid trains) on the Tobu Railway lines between Shimo-imaichi and Tōbu-nikkō / Kinugawa-onsen. Between Kurihashi and Shimo-imaichi, you can only use express trains that have through operations with Tobu Railway.**
    • JR buses in the area (exc. highway and some regular bus routes)
    • *BRT: bus rapid transit
    • **You cannot use express trains that both depart from and terminate at stations on Tobu Railway lines. You can only use the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) on Tobu Railway lines if the train either departs from or terminates at a JR station.
  • NOTE:
    • You cannot use the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area) to travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen. (This is because the Tokaido Shinkansen is operated by a different company).
    • Gala Yuzawa Station only operates during the winter and spring.​ ​
